In a heavyweight battle between two teams with a combined record of 23-1 entering the game, the DCC Buccaneers escaped with a hard fought victory over #14 ranked Western Wyoming College 74-73 on Sunday afternoon in their final game of the Gillette Borders Wars (Region IX vs. Region XIII). The Bucs got out to an early 15 point lead in the first half and led by 9 at the break. Western Wyoming hung tough and battled back to take a 3 point lead at the 8:27 mark of the 2nd half. After that, it was a back and forth battle that came down to a big defensive rebound by Cordell Stinson who got fouled as he came down. He connected on two big FT's with 22 seconds left and the Bucs got a great defensive stop on the final possession to preserve the victory over the previously undefeated Mustangs.
Coach Joe Peterson proudly stated, "Our guys showed a lot of toughness playing our third game in three days against another top team. Western Wyoming is so tough physically and mentally, and they are so well coached. Our guys stayed strong and kept playing through touch circumstances and made the plays necessary to win the game."
Joe Mpoyo led the way for Dawson with 15 points on 5-8 shooting from 3PT. He was the only Buccaneer in double figures, but there were four others who scored 9 points and ten players got in the scoring column. Jajuan Tot had a solid game with 9 points and 5 assists and Kennedy Brown contributed 9 points and 10 rebounds.
The Mustangs were led by Dayne Prim who scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. D'Auntray Pierce and Trevor Trost both scored in double digits as well with Trost finished with 12 points and Pierce scoring 10 points as well as grabbing 7 rebounds.
Dawson now stands at 11-1 on the season and have won 8 games in a row. They will host the Dickinson State University JV team in Glendive on Friday night at 7:30 pm in an exhibition game.
