The DCC Buccaneers won their second straight game in the Gillette Border Wars Tournament which is pitting Region IX teams vs. Region XIII teams. On Saturday the Bucs took down Casper College 102-95. It was Dawson’s 7th straight win overall and pushes their record to 10-1 on the season. The T-Birds shot 62% from the field and 56% from the 3-point line, but Dawson still managed to control most of the game by forcing 21 turnovers and making 17 of 21 free throws in the second half.
“I don’t know the entire history, but I don’t remember a time that Dawson has beat Casper and Western Nebraska and I’m pretty positive we haven’t beaten those two teams on back to back nights in our program’s 60+ year history,” commented Bucs Coach Joe Peterson. “We’ve had two really good wins against two highly respected programs. I really liked the consistency and composure we played with tonight. They really shot it well early, but we stuck with our game plan and kept coming at them. Eventually they wore down from our style and our depth. It was a fun game to watch and a fun game to coach. We’re excited for another great game tomorrow.”
Casper’s Rashaun Agee had a dominating individual performance, scoring 37 points on 13-19 shooting, including 4-7 from the 3-point line and 7-9 on free throws. He also grabbed 12 rebounds and 3 steals in 39 minutes. Point guard PJ Ngambi also contributed 24 points on 9-11 shooting in 37 minutes, but no other T-Bird hit double figures.
Dawson once again had 12 guys in the scoring column and 4 guys in double figures led by Jalen Tot’s 21 points in 22 minutes. Joe Mpoyo had 15 points and 4 rebounds. Kose Egbule poured in 13 points in 12 minutes and Kennedy Brown added 11 points.
Casper led for a majority of the first half behind their hot shooting and Agee’s dominating performance. He scored 24 points in the opening half while Jalen Tot scored 15 for the Bucs. Dawson hung around though and took the lead going in the intermission when Egbule connected on a 3-pointer at the buzzer when Jajuan Tot found him alone in the corner.
In the second half, DCC got up by as much as 15. Casper made a few runs, but the final outcome was never really in doubt. Dawson took good care of the ball and made their free throws, especially when they counted. Their bench scored 58 of their team’s 102 points.
Dawson will play #14 ranked Western Wyoming College on Sunday at 3:15 pm. Western Wyoming is 13-0 on the season.
