Four Bucs Named All-Conference
Four Dawson Community College basketball players were named All Mon-Dak Conference this week. DeAngelo Horn and Reggie Martin were named to the first team while Jalen Tot and Kennedy Brown were named to the second team. These four individuals helped the Bucs go 25-5 in the regular season and win the Region Championship, beating North Dakota State College of Science on the road 84-75 Monday night.
Horn is a 6’5 freshman forward from Aurora, Colorado. He is averaging 10.3 points and 4.8 rebounds while shooting 64% from the field to lead the conference. He also led the conference in offensive rebounds per 40 minutes. He was top 10 in blocks per game as well. Horn came on strong in the last couple of months of the season, scoring in double figures 11 times in his last 14 games, including a season high 22 points against Bismarck State when he went 10-10 from the field. Dawson Coach Joe Peterson commented, “DeAngelo kept getting better and better as the season went on. Some freshman hit a wall halfway through, but he busted through the wall and kept on going. His numbers don’t wow you, but his efficiency and impact on the game does; as well as his highlight dunks.”
Reggie Martin is a 6’3 second year guard from North Caddo, Louisiana. He was Dawson’s leading scorer, averaging 12 points per game in conference to go along with 4.7 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.3 steals. Martin shot 54% from the field and 42% from the three-point line in conference games. He was 2nd in the conference in three-point percentage and 7th in field goal percentage. Martin also came on strong in the second half of the season, scoring at least 8 points in all 16 games and reaching double figures 13 times. His season high was 24 points vs. Bismarck State. Coach Peterson shared, “Reggie exudes positivity and energy and his teammates feed off it. He is freakishly athletic, but the time he has spent in the gym working on his shot has really paid off and turned him into a knockdown shooter.”
Jalen Tot is a 6’1 second year guard from Dallas, Texas. Tot averaged 10.8 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 2.2 steals per game while shooting 45% from the field, 34% from 3-point range and 77% from the free throw line. He led the conference in steals per 40 minutes. Tot led Dawson in scoring for most of the season and scored over 8 points in 25 of the 31 games he played in and reached double digits in 18 games. Coach Peterson added, “Jalen does so much on the court that shows up on the stat sheet, but a lot that doesn’t as well. He has a high basketball IQ and really impacts the game on the defensive end as well as the offensive game. He has battled through sickness and injuries over the past couple of weeks, but he is very tough and always finds a way to help his team.”
Kennedy Brown is a 6’8 second year forward from Chicago, Illinois. He averages 10 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game and leads the team in free throw shooting percentage at 84.2% (91.3% in conference games). Brown leads the conference in blocked shots. He scored at least 8 points in 18 of his 27 games and reached double figures 12 times. His season high was 20 points against nationally ranked Pima Community College. He reached double digit rebounds in 6 games and his season high was 15 against United Tribes Technical College. “Kennedy has good size and athleticism and knows how to go and get the ball and finish,” shared Coach Peterson. He has also really helped us as a rim protector on defense and is an imposing force down low.”
Horn, Martin, Tot, Brown and the rest of the Buccaneers are preparing to play in the District Championship Game in Iowa on Saturday night at 6:00 pm MST vs. #6 Indian Hills Community College. This will be the third straight year the two teams have been matched up in the District Championship with the winner automatically qualifying for nationals. In 2020 Indian Hills beat Dawson 92-65 in Iowa and last year the Bucs returned the favor 68-67 in Montana.
