Dawson Wins Again on the Road
The Dawson Buccaneers basketball team beat the Northwest College Trappers 100-81 on the road Friday night in Powell, Wyoming. It was their 9th straight win and boosts their record to 12-1 on the season. The Trappers started out well, gaining a five point advantage in the first three minutes, but the Bucs turned the game around with pressure defense, fast paced offense and hot shooting from the outside. Dawson went up by 17 points with 6:30 remaining in the first half. Behind the scoring of Alex Avila, Northwest made a late run and cut it to ten heading into the break. The Bucs forced 10 first half turnovers and converted them into 14 points. They shot a blistering 59% from the field and 50% from long range, but didn’t make it to the free throw line. Reggie Martin led the way with 14 points on 6-7 shooting and Riley Spoonhunter scored 11 behind three 3-pointers.
Dawson kept the margin in double digits for the entire second half and eventually built up a 24 point lead with 8 minutes to go. Northwest was never able to get back within striking distance as Dawson shot over 50% from the field and 50% from the 3-point line in the second half as well. DCC dominated the boards in the second half, outrebounding Northwest by 14.
Dawson Coach Joe Peterson commented, “It was a mature road performance tonight. There were a lot of things that could have distracted us like final exams this week, Christmas plans coming up, over confidence from beating them soundly at home; but our guys came in focused, brought energy and played solidly. It’s never easy to win on the road and this is a place I’ve never won at as a player or a coach, so it feels good to get over the hump and get it done.”
Gabriel Gutierrez led the Trappers with 18 points.
Martin finished with 21 points on 9-11 shooting for Dawson. Spoonhunter had 21, including three more 3’s in the second half. Michael Jok added 12 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. Kennedy Brown had 8 points and 10 rebounds. Six other Buccaneers got in the scoring column and nine players shot 50% from the field or better.
