Bucs Stay Undefeated
It wasn’t pretty on Thursday night, but the DCC Bucs used a 12-0 run in the middle of the second half to stay unbeaten. Dawson started slowly, and found themselves in a close game for about the first 27 minutes of play. The Rocky Mountain College JV had taken a one point lead on a 3-pointer with 12:56 remaining before Riley Spoonhunter responded back with a 3 pointer of his own on an assist from Jajuan Tot. Tot then got a steal in the press and fed Kennedy Brown a perfect alley-oop pass to increase the lead to four points. A few possessions later, Michael Jok scored and then Spoonhunter followed it up with another 3-pointer and a drive and score to give Dawson a 48-37 advantage with 8:47 remaining. DCC pushed the lead to 19 points in the next five minutes and sailed to a 67-50 victory on their home court.
The first half was a low scoring affair with neither team shooting it very well. Dawson only shot 31% from the field and went 1-13 from the 3-point line. Rocky only shot 30% from the field but managed to connect on 45% from the 3-point line. Rocky jumped out to a 10-3 advantage early in the game and Dawson didn’t have their first lead until Kennedy Brown scored to give them a 21-19 advantage with 5:32 remaining. They went into the intermission with the Bucs clinging to a 27-24 lead.
Coach Joe Peterson said, “We didn’t play our best game tonight. Rocky wanted it more early on and they were the ones on the floor and banging inside. We had a hard time scoring and that makes it hard to get your press going and push the pace to how we want it. This was a good game for us. We learned more about our personnel and some things we need to work on. Hopefully it will make us better!”
Dawson was led by Kennedy Brown's 14 points (7/12 FG) and 9 rebounds (7 offensive), and Isaiah Bouchard's 9 points and 8 rebounds. Michael Jok added 11 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists.
Rocky Mountain College was led by Mick O'Conner's 16 points and 11 rebounds (5 offensive). Michael Cover and Kaden Perron both added 11 points for the Battlin' Bears.
Dawson Community College will continue conference play next week with two more home games. Monday's game will be against 2nd place Williston State and Thursday's game will be vs. Miles CC.
