Bucs Explode in First Half and Cruise to Another Double Digit Win Over Miles
Dawson Community College jumped out early on the visiting Miles Community College Pioneers in Mon-Dak Conference action Thursday night. Charles Lampten scored the first two baskets and then Hezekia Swanson followed up with a 3-pointer. Jalen Tot then scored a basket in transition and converted the free throw for a traditional three-point play. Kennedy Brown scored inside to give the Bucs a 12-0 lead six minutes into the game. Dylan Hushaw stopped the bleeding for the visiting Pioneers with a basket, but Reggie Martin and Mike Jok hit back-to back 3-pointers to put Dawson up 18-2. MCC answered back with a 12-2 run to pull within six points, but it wasn’t enough as DCC responded with a 15-5 run and then closed out the half with another 10-0 run sparked by Lampten and Martin again. Kose Egbule ended the first half scoring with a lay-up to put Dawson up 45-22.
Dawson’s defense held the Pioneers to 20% shooting in the first half and outrebounded them 28-18. The Bucs shot 52% from the field and 50% from 3-point range in the opening twenty minutes and ten different players got into the scoring column, led by Lampten’s 8 points, 5 rebounds and 6 blocks.
Miles got hot from long range in the second half, shooting 8-19 from 3-point range. At one point, they hit three straight from long range, but even with that, they were never able to cut it to single digits. The 76-63 win moved Dawson to 7-0 in the conference and 8-0 overall and dropped MCC to 4-5.
DCC Coach Joe Peterson commented, "Our defense was really strong in the first half and they struggled to score at the rim with Charles Lampten protecting the paint. Their shooting really got going in the second half and we needed to do a better job of being there on the catch. We weren't locked in for forty minutes like we needed to be."
The Buccaneers again had a very balanced scoring attack, as they had 9 players score at least 5 points. Dawson was led by Reggie Martin's 11 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists. Charles Lampten stuffed the stat sheet with 10 points, 7 rebounds, and 7 blocks. Kennedy Brown also contributed 10 points and 5 rebounds.
Miles Community College was led by Dylan Hushaw's 22 points on 6 3-pointers and 4 rebounds. Favour Chukwukela added 18 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists.
The Dawson Buccaneers will have the weekend off and be back in action Monday versus United Tribes Technical College.
