Former Buccaneer Cam’ron Dunfee has joined the basketball coaching staff as an assistant coach. Originally from Castle Rock, Colorado, Dunfee played for the Bucs from 2018-2020, helping Coach Peterson earn his first conference and region championships in that memorable 2019-2020 season in which Dawson went 27-7 and won their first Tip-off Tournament Championship, Mon-Dak Conference Championship and the Region XIII Championship.  They went a perfect 14-0 in conference play and earned the right to host the region tournament. In the Region XIII Tournament Championship game, Dunfee made a free throw with five seconds remaining to give the Bucs the 96-95 win in one of the most exciting games in their storied history.

In his sophomore year at Dawson, Dunfee averaged 16.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.9 assists per game while shooting 48% from the field, 44% from the 3-point line and 80% from the free throw line. He was selected First Team All Conference and All Region XIII.

After Dawson, Dunfee played at Minot State University for three years. He averaged 12.6 points while shooting over 40% from the 3-point line and 87% from the free throw line in his career. He is the all-time leader for the Beavers in free throw percentage for a season and 3 point percentage in a game. He is also in the top 10 all-time at Minot for 3’s made in a game, 3 point attempts in a career, free throw percentage in a career, minutes averaged in a season, and minutes averaged in a career.

Dunfee always had a flare for the dramatic and stepped up in some of the biggest games and crucial moments of his career. In the 2021 NSIC quarterfinals at the Pentagon, he poured in 30 points in 43 minutes against Upper Iowa to advance to the Semifinals. In his senior season, he hit a buzzer beater in triple overtime on the road at Southwest Minnesota State to lead the Beavers to a 1st round victory in the NSIC tournament, sending them to the quarterfinals at the Pentagon in South Dakota.

After his college career ended, Dunfee played professionally in Australia for a short while before returning home to begin his coaching career.

“We are really excited to add Coach Cam to our staff at Dawson,” explained Dawson Coach Joe Peterson. “He has a good knowledge of the game, is driven and hard-working, and loves helping players develop. He’s got a great future in the game if he keeps learning and growing. He played at a high level and understands what it takes to win on the court and in life.”

Dunfee joins a Buccaneer squad who went 29-4 last year and once again won the conference championship and region championship. Dawson fell just a few points short of qualifying for the National Tournament. They return 6 players from last year’s team, along with 3 redshirts returning. The Bucs have added two transfers and a slew of freshmen who will compete for time. They will have some scrimmages in October and then officially open their season on October 31st at the Mon-Dak Tip-off Tournament in Newtown, ND. Their first home games will be on November 6 and 7.
