The Dawson Community College Volleyball team kicked off their season against in-state rivals, Miles Community College. Both schools brought back their volleyball programs this year after a long hiatus and opened the season against each other.
DCC started the match off a little slow and played point for point with MCC before pulling away late in the first set and grabbing a one set lead with a 25-19 victory. The Lady Bucs came out strong in the second set and rushed out to a big lead early on, but the Lady Pioneers made a late game push, but it was not enough as the Bucs took a two set lead by winning 25-18. After a ten minute intermission, play resumed and the excitement was back on. DCC wanted to get the sweep, but Miles wasn’t going to go away quietly. MCC had a 22-20 lead towards the end of the third set, but DCC rallied behind Channa Clarin’s series of blocks and behind the intensity and support of the 450 person crowd at the Toepke Gym and ended the final set 26-24 to get the 3-0 sweep again Miles Community College.
The first game of the season had a little bit of everything with some close sets and potential blowouts that turned into comebacks. The turnout for this first game was a sight to see and Coach Dina Fritz couldn’t be more pleased with the amount of support from the student body, staff, Glendive community, and the surrounding schools and communities, “I hope to see that many people at our games every night we play. It makes for great volleyball and shows how much everyone supports our community college.”
The win on Tuesday night was definitely a team effort. Several Lady Bucs had outstanding performances. Lexi Begger finished with 7 kills and Cierra Loudon had 6 kills and 15 digs for the Bucs. Erin Campbell added 10 digs and 3 aces and Clarin finished the match with 6 blocks. Samantha Egan was the assist leader with 20 assists.
The Bucs will take on the MCC Pioneers once again on the road at 4pm on Friday, the 25th of August, for their second game of the season. Then DCC will host Lake Region State College on August 30th at 7pm for their second home game.
