Dawson Community College has added another player to the 2017 roster. Head Coach Romeo Lagmay, Jr. has signed Ellarena Eriacho of Olympus High School in Salt Lake City, UT.
Ellarena, also known as Ella, is a 5’9 small forward who will join a new basketball roster for DCC. The Lady Bucs only return two players from last season that went 21-10 on the year. Ella was a varsity starter who shot 41% from the field, averaging 4.3 ppg and 4 rpg, but managed to be ranked in the top 20 in the state in rebounding during the season in class 4A, which is Utah’s 2nd highest division. Ella was also honored for team awards as a sharp shooter and most versatile. She also improved throughout her academic studies in high school, raising her GPA from a 1.9 to eventually a 3.1.
Coach Lagmay stated, “I’m thrilled to have Ella join our family here at DCC. She had a great visit despite being done with basketball season and somewhat out of shape, currently playing softball and driving over 11 hours right after a softball game to visit. Ella was able to show good signs during an individual workout and team 5 on 5 play. She has been taught well with sound fundamentals, and she has lots of room to make herself better. I have seen her play defend some of the toughest post players in Utah, and she definitely held her own while producing a solid offensive game. Advanced conditioning and added strength will be something for Ella to work on this summer prior to her arrival.”
Olympus High School Head Girl’s Basketball Coach Whitney Hunsaker said, "I couldn't be more excited or more proud of Ella. She has definitely come a long way in all aspects of her life since I met her two years ago. Ella is an athletic, lanky, crafty player and is filled with enormous potential. That potential has just been scratched, so I am very excited that she will be able to continue her basketball career at Dawson. Ella is also beyond excited for this opportunity to continue the thing she loves most, basketball. When Ella went on her visit, she had the opportunity to sign with Coach Lagmay at Dawson, but she wanted to take it back home and be surrounded by her teammates and coaches that have supported her in this journey. She loves her teammates and I know she will continue to be the team player that she currently is.”
Ellarena commented on why she committed to Dawson, “I am very excited to commit to Dawson Community College and continue the game I love to the next level! I strongly felt welcomed at this school when I first came up and visited. It brought a warm feeling that I’ve never felt towards a school. The teammates were so nice and I’m glad I got to go around the campus and meet most of the faculty and staff. It was like the whole school was a family and I can see myself in there, achieving goals I’ve been waiting for to be achieved.
I’m looking forward to playing ball at this school, as well as keeping my mind focused in school. Knowing that all the teachers are involved in helping their students strive to success, was also another reason why I chose DCC. A moment like this, is something worth taking a shot for.”
